“Into the Woods” is the multi-Tony Award musical written by Stephen Sondheim (music and lyrics) and James Lapine (book), which blends the plots of several of the famous fables by the German folklorists, the Brothers Grimm. In this fractured fairytale, a childless baker and his wife lead the audience into the woods. They have been cursed by a neighboring witch and their goal is to break that curse. But to do so, they must find a “cow as white as milk, a cape as red as blood, hair as yellow as corn and a slipper pure as gold.” Along the way the baker and his wife will meet characters right out of the pages of: “Little Red Riding Hood,” “Jack and the Beanstalk,” “Rapunzel” and other well-known tales. “Into the Woods, Jr.” is the first act of the Sondheim/Lupine musical. It was designed especially by its authors for young performers and their audiences.

They can keep their child home that day and write an excuse.”.

From then on it’s a major case of mutual attraction. What happens after that is, of course, quite madcap, but let it be said that the two principals, vivacious red-haired April Culver, playing the dual roles of Viola and Thomas Kent, and Drew Benjamin Jones, requite themselves very nicely when they do portions of the two most famous scenes in “Romeo and Juliet:” the balcony scene and the death scene.
